Foxygen – “Shuggie”
Foxygen is the bi-coastal songwriting duo of Sam France (vocals, Olympia, Wash., 22 years old) and Jonathan Rado (guitar/keyboards, NYC, 22). They are the raw, de-Wes Andersonization of The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Velvets, Bowie, etc. that a whole mess of young people desperately need. They create a sometimes-impressionistic, sometimes-hyper-real portrait of sounds from specific places and times. Yet, it never comes across as anything but absolutely modern music. They bring the manic, freewheeling qualities of an artist like Ariel Pink to those aforementioned influences to make for one of the most refreshing listens of the year. They are the real deal and total savants. Their albums are love letters to vinyl collections. Their music can be found on JAGJAGUWAR label.

The Vaccines – “Bad Mood”
Now in headline slots at European festivals, The Vaccines have outgrown the club scene, so two weeks ago at The Troubadour was special. The guys played this long-ago sold-out show in order to get LA music people buzzing about their upcoming US album release. The Vaccines Come of Age is already out in the UK and doing quite well. The band will tell you that they are becoming more rock as opposed to indie, and “Bad Mood” definitely shows off this evolution. Guitarist Freddie Cowan has never sounded better. The entire album is ace, as the band have broadened their sound and definitely “come of age”.
Go Deep w/ Bruce Rave airs Sundays from 7-9pm Pacific and Wednesdays from 2-4am Pacific

Tanlines – “All of Me”
Tanlines are a Brooklyn duo consisting of guitarist/vocalist Eric Emm and percussionist (and everything else) Jesse Cohen. They released their first full length album earlier this year on True Panther Sounds. They formed in 2008, but did mostly production, remixes, and an EP (or split EP) here and there. The full length finally gave them the room to stretch out their legs, which was apparently all the better to dance with! Really fun and melodic without being overly clubby, it’s a perfect mix of lighthearted yet serious dance music. If that all just seems too contradictory, have a listen to their infections single, “All of Me,” and enjoy having it stuck in your brain for the rest of the day.
Catch Mo every Tuesday-Thursday from 10am-2pm Pacific, and every Friday from 1-3pm Pacific on Moheak Radio.

Freedom Fry – “Jesse James”
Many fans have heard Bruce Driscoll with his sister Erica as part of the red-hot electro-pop group , whose single “Where the Kids Are” seems to be where everybody is. Driscoll has a side project that’s equally alluring, though more to fans of pure pop. It’s called , and in this duo he teams up with Parisian songstress Marie Seyrat for boy/girl goodness that’s swimming in harpsichord, dulcimer, autoharp, and ukulele. Freedom Fry’s new nods to some epic ba guys – “Jesse James,” “Bonnie & Clyde” and “Billy the Kid” are your song titles. Hard not to swoon over the single “Jesse James.”
