Show Review: Cold Cave @ the Fonda
10:49 am in Mo Herms, Show Review, Zowie by Moheak Radio
Cold Cave, aka Wesley Eisold, has been bouncing around Los Angeles doing all sorts of performances for the last couple months, but he logged in a big one with a opening slot touring with the super hot Divine Fits. Spending some time away from his New York home to work on new music, the synth pop musician creates on his own with occasional contributions from other artists and always has a band with him for his live shows. Moheak Radio Spotlight: Big Scary
10:07 pm in Mo Herms, Moheak Radio Spotlight by Moheak Radio
Big Scary is an Australian duo (Tom Iansek on vocals and guitar with Jo Syme on percussion and vocals) that can swing from beautiful indie folk to chunky rock and roll all in the course of an EP. Their harmonies range from gorgeous to whimsical, and sounds that can remind someone of the angular arrangements of Pavement one moment and the melodramatic grandeur of Jeff Buckley the next. They have just released their full length, Vacation, here in the States and spent some time with Moheak Radio to introduce themselves.

Show Review: The Afghan Whigs @ The Fillmore
7:00 am in Mo Herms, Show Review by Moheak Radio
A devoted, sold-out crowd welcomed the temporarily reunited Afghan Whigs to their first show in San Francisco since 1998, when they amicably disbanded, feeling like they had just done as much as they could do. Unlike many breakups, these guys stayed friends, and in interviews over the years, it was evident that the three constants – Greg Dulli, John Curley, and Rick McCollum – shared a lot of love for each other and supported one another in their post Whigs lives. Moheak Radio Spotlight: Milo Greene
11:38 am in Mo Herms, Moheak Radio Spotlight by Moheak Radio
At SXSW last year, Milo Greene was listed over and over again within the program as: “Greene, Milo.” The folks in change didn’t figure out that Milo Greene wasn’t actually a human, but a bunch of humans: Andrew Heringer, Robbie Arnett, Marlana Sheetz, Graham Fink, and Curtis Marrero. Fans still found them, in droves, and are continuing to find this Los Angeles quintet as their self-titled debut has landed them on college radio, cool tours, and big shows of their own. Moheak got to chat with the band about what they are up to right now.

Show Review: PiL @ Club Nokia
9:30 am in Mo Herms, Show Review, Zowie by Moheak Radio
Johnny Lydon formed Public Image Limited, aka PiL after the Sex Pistols disbanded as he wanted to rant along to a different kind of music. The band had so many lineup changes over the years that it is safe to say that the band is Lydon, plus whoever he chooses to have play with him at the time. Nevertheless, it has been a winning combo, with PiL’s early album Metal Box regularly listed by critics as one of the best albums of all time. But the band went on a very extended hiatus, from 1993 – 2009, while Lydon pursued other projects. (And an appearance on Judge Judy. Seriously. Google it.)

Show Review: The Darkness @ Club Nokia
9:45 am in Mo Herms, Show Review by Moheak Radio
When the Darkness roared into our collective rock and roll consciousness back in 2003 with the gloriously glam anthem, “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” they activated the guilty pleasure chips in enough people to have their debut album hit the top of the alternative charts. Complete with navel baring spandex jumpsuits, a ridiculously high falsetto and an intense tongue in cheek attitude, they brought back a seventies rock sensibility that evidently fans had been missing. 11:03 am in Mo Herms, Moheak Radio Spotlight by Moheak Radio
The Ross Sea Party is named after explorers, kinda. The Ross Sea Party was one component of a group of explorers who navigated Antarctica in the early 20th century, and that outing went wrong. When the musical Ross Sea Party was forming, lead singer and guitarist Brady Erickson was reading the The Endurance, and something about the tale of navigating the unknown was oddly relatable to the experience of making music in today’s climate. Moheak got to chat with the band about how they got together and do what they do. Read the rest of this entry →

For any kids in their post goth phases in the late ‘80s, Crime & the City Solution were practically hand delivered from the art movie houses to their college cafes. This group of Australians moved to London and then seedy Berlin to further their particular brand of post rock; dramatic poems that came across like the Doors as filtered through a reverb soaked Ennio Morricone score.
