Show Review: The Vaccines @ the Troubadour

English indie rockers, The Vaccines, formed in 2010 and within a year had zoomed to the top of the UK charts, drawing comparisons to acts like The Strokes and the Arctic Monkeys. They were definitely putting the “rock” into the indie rock, and seemed determined to become much, much more. It’s only been a couple of years since then, and the boys swung through LA to show just how far they’ve come in such a short time.
As lead singer Justin Young took the stage, shaggy haired and scruffy, he spoke of first visiting Los Angeles five years ago and declaring that someday he would be playing at the Troubador. The nearly hour long set was the fruition of that dream, so they played their hearts out for a crowd who ate it all up. Tracks from the first album were well received, as they rocked out the tunes “Post Break Up Sex” and “Wetsuit,” and proved that their live shows have become more than a small club can handle. Another older track that made the audience wild was “Bad Mood,” especially fun because it gave guitarist Freddy Cowan a chance to show off his chops and impress everyone further. The new album (which hasn’t been released in the States, but is on its way) wasn’t left out… They played a few cuts from that, including the single “Teenage Icon,” which the loyal crowd already knew. The Vaccines didn’t bother with any covers – they didn’t need to – nor did they bother with an encore. You know it was a good show when the crowd stays even after the house lights have come up, chanting for more, but the band gave all they got and a good time was had.
