Show Review: Indie Night @ Los Globos
4:13 pm in Los Globos, Mo Herms, Show Review by Moheak Radio
If you didn’t make it out to the last Moheak Radio Indie Night, you missed a rollicking good time. Four excellent LA bands filled the bill and the room: Noel & the Carlones, Echoes de Luxe, Bullet & Snowfox & The Record Company.
Noel & the Carlones played a sincere set of indie, which was both romantic and rockin’ at the same time. And, like most things in Los Angeles, with Spanish overtones in the lyrics and more subtley in the music. Echoes de Luxe sounded harder and blusier than they have, adding some compelling jams to their already engaging songs. Highlights included fan fave “The Ride,” and great renditions of their tracks “Hold On” and “Rotten Wine.” Bullet and Snowfox also commanded the stage, with singer Kristen Wagner showing exactly what a star front person can do, and making the crowd shake it with her.
One of the newer bands causing a ruckus in Los Angeles these days is a trio called The Record Company. Sure, trying to Google that name might not get you to those guys right away, but if you like a thing called blues, it’s worth it to you to find them. Folks in the modern rock world would be quick to liken them to the Black Keys because of their soulful sound, but this band sincerely rocks pretty pure blues with a whole lot of heart and the vocals to match. Think a modern day Howlin’ Wolf, and you’re more on track.
The Record Company played this gig amidst a flurry of LA shows, prepping themselves for a warm-up national slot with the Whigs. They held the room spellbound, with singer Chris Vos’ full and rugged voice dredging up thoughts of Louisiana swamps and not his hometown of Milwaukee on “Don’t Let Me Get Lonely.” Alex Stiff jammed on bass while drummer Marc Cazorla stood up at his kit to shout the chorus of “Medicine Man” along with Vos enthusiastically at the crowd. “I wanna do something special for you now,” said Vos, as the band rolled out a (bluesy, of course) rendition of the Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want” and a truly inspired mash-up of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” with “Can Your Pussy Do the Dog,” from the Cramps, giving shouts outs to both the late MCA and Lux Interior, respectively. Expect to see more fun and mind-blowing shows from The Record Company in the future, if you can fit yourself into the packed rooms.
