Kevin Devine Returns With Two New 7″ Singles As He Puts Finishing Touches On Forthcoming LP, Between The Concrete And Clouds
LOS ANGELES, April 21, 2011 – Stepping off his side-project run as one half of Bad Booksalong with Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull, the ever-prolific Kevin Devine is adding the finishing touches to his next solo effort, Between The Concrete And Clouds, due this fall. Meanwhile, two 7” singles are currently available for pre-order. Devine will test-drive his new material on the west coast at residencies in two cities: Los Angeles and Portland. Titled “An Evening With Kevin Devine and Friends,” the shows will take place at Hotel Café (May 11, 18, 25) in L.A. and at Crystal Hotel and Ballroom in Portland (free shows May 29-June 4), and feature a rotating cast of guests and musicians, along with some surprises.
Equally adept at performing stripped-down and acoustic, or rocking with a full band, each night of the forthcoming residencies will be a unique experience, with Devine and special guests taking on tracks from Devine’s extensive back catalogue and debuting songs from his forthcoming effort. On May 11, Devine will perform Between The Concrete And Clouds in its entirety, accompanied by indie chanteuse Holly Miranda as well as local darling Morgan Kibby of White Sea. Prior to heading to Portland, Devine will perform an all-ages show at Chain Reaction in Anaheim.
In anticipation of his sixth full-length, Devine’s two new 7” singles “Luxembourg” and “Part of the Whole” are currently available for pre-order, due May 17 via Academy Fight Song Records. Recorded, produced, and mixed in Los Angeles over just two days in January by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Guided by Voices), all instrumentation on the singles was played by Devine (except for drums, performed by Ben Homola of Bad Books).
Devine’s fifth full-length, Brother’s Blood, received near unanimous praise for its sonic ambition and maturity. “The grinding eight-minute title track finds Devine in full-bore Crazy Horse mode and it’s thrilling,” beamed SPIN. Alternative Press exclaimed: “Kevin Devine’s cycle of self-reactions reaches its best results yet with Brother’s Blood, a wildly varied affair featuring hushed acoustic/electric ditties and cathartic, jagged howlers.” Under the Radarchimed: “These songs have a heft and dynamism we haven’t heard from Devine until now,” adding: “It’s impossible not to think of Elliott Smith when listening.”
